“ECOSOC should raise its voice for the resolution of conflicts, return of refugees and IDPs to their native lands and schools…” – Umud Rahimoglu address to ECOSOC
Umud Rahimoglu, Chairperson of the International Eurasia Press Fund participated in UN ECOSOC High Level Segment held on July 4-8, 2011, Geneva, Switzerland. The speakers at the HLS held at Le Palais Des Nations in Geneva include: Dilma Vana Rousseff, President of Brazil; Gordon Brown, Former Prime Minister, United Kingdom; Irina Bokova, Director General, UNESCO; Antony Lake, Executive Director, UNICEF; Elizabeth King, Director of Education, World Bank; Lazarous Kapambwe, President, Economic and Social Council; and heads of various UN agencies. Also Ministers of Education of Germany, Belarus, Senegal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Qatar, Zambia, and Malawi participated and made speeches at the Segment.
On the first day of the Segment Mahmud Mammadguliyev, Deputy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan gave a speech as well. Permanent Representative of Turkey to the United Nations in Geneva, investigative scholars from influential universities and officials from various international funds joined the High Level Segment and also took turns at various days of the meetings to make statements.
As it was planned Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General, United Nations joined the session of High level Segment on the 4th day and gave a speech. U. Rahimoglu met with Ban Ki-moon Secretary-General, United Nations. On the same day, U. Rahimoglu made a statement on the theme “Encouraging equal human development through education as a means to ensure self-sufficiency for the war victims of Azerbaijan and their family members” related to the topic “Implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to Education” to reach the MDGs.
During his statement he touched the new created educational system and its development path after achieving independence. U. Rahimoglu spoke about Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict over the Naqorniy Karabagh area, its negative influence on Azerbaijan, particularly on educational system. At the end of his speech he addressed to ECOSOC with the sentence “Please, raise your voice for the resolution of conflicts, return of refugees and IDPs to their native lands and schools”.
It should be noted that IEPF is the member of ECOSOC with special consultative status since 2007. Along with ECOSOC, IEPF closely collaborates/or conduct discussions for joint collaboration with other UN agencies as UNHCR, UNDPI, UNICEF, UNESCO and International Organization for Migration. IEPF through own resources takes, annually, humanitarian aid to refugees/IDPs, families with poor life circumstances and war victims.Umud Rahimoglu made statement at the UN High Level Segment, 2011
